At LOOP Fair 2017, BERG Contemporary will present Golden Voyage (1973) by pioneering video artists Steina & Woody Vasulka.
In the mid-1970s, while working with various engineers and designers, the Vasulkas developed electronic tools specifically designed for art usage. They merged analog methods to digital methods, resulting in the precursor of many computer aided visualizations used today. In Golden Voyage, Magritte’s painting The Golden Legend (1958) becomes a pretext for exploring the possibilities of video, a medium that was still being defined at the time. The baguettes in the painting are the recurring motif in the video. The loaves of bread are manipulated electronically to change their location in the landscape.
