In memory of Björn Roth and Goddur
January 06, 2026
We at BERG Contemporary would like to start the new year by remembering our great friends Björn Roth and Goddur, as we share the news of their passing. We bid them farewell with gratitude for their collaboration through the years and their immeasurable contribution to Icelandic art history. We would like to extend our deepest condolences to their friends and family.

Born in 1961, Björn Roth's artistic career began with experimental, visual music performances in the late 1970s and soon developed into an extensive and close collaboration with his father, Dieter Roth. Since Dieter's death, Björn worked equally on his own artistic creations while continuing to expand the large installations and other works co-authored by his father and himself alongside his solo practice. He was one of BERG Contemporary's artists and he held a solo exhibition at the gallery in 2018, Nervettis, which showcased his oil and watercolor series created between 2009 and 2018.

Guðmundur Oddur Magnússon (Goddur) was born in 1955 and was an expert in the use of visual language and the history of graphic design in Iceland. For the last two decades, he worked as a professor at the Design Department of the Iceland Academy of the Arts, which he himself founded around the turn of the century. He touched upon numerous subjects, but in addition to teaching with great enthusiasm, he was also a renowned art critic. He organized several art exhibitions and wrote countless articles about design and art. He had a successful collaboration with Bjarni H. Þórarinsson, and their collaborative works are on display in the gallery.

Their memory will live on in their works of art and legacy for generations to come.
